What is special about this course?
This course offers a taster of units specially selected to expand students' knowledge and creative approaches to art and design practice. You will gain experience working with materials and techniques, develop your drawing and making skills and be supported to build a portfolio of work.
All units are practical and studio based with a contextual study element. Individual, group and flexible learning is encouraged through class dialogue in a supportive environment. Problem solving and original thinking are embedded core skills.
The course can be used a stepping stone to a new occupation/ hobby or for further specialist study. It will open up new possibilities for your creative practice.
Entry requirements
Interview with a selected portfolio of Art and Design work.
2 Intermediate 2, or National 5 passes (Usually Art & Design and English).
However it is recommended that any student wishing to articulate on to Degree courses gains entry requirements prior to application (usually 4 passes at Higher).
Applications to the course are welcome from adults returning to education who may not possess the entry requirements.
This January start course covers 2 SQA units:
Exploratory Media Handling F5CJ 12
Introduction to Sculpture F9VG 11
These units introduce a wide range of materials and techniques and offer a good foundation if you wish to carry on and study the full NC Art and Design course.
Equipment
As well as the specialist art studio, there is access to computer suites with study and research space also available within the college library. There you will find art and design reference material, PCs and internet access.

This part time course is based in the main art studio at UHI Orkney and takes place weekly on Wednesdays 9.00 – 4.00 from January - May.
Teaching will be face to face and includes practical work, theory, discussion, writing and home study.

What can I do on completion of my course?
What can I do on completion of my course?
You can continue on the NC Art & Design on a part or full time basis.
You may also progress on to further and higher education courses in areas such as art, photography, graphic design, fashion and jewellery. Locally you can progress to our BA (Hons) Fine Art courses delivered at UHI Orkney.
Employment/Career: Achieving the NC Art & Design qualification may lead to apprenticeships in jewellery, digital media, graphic design, retail or interior design.
Former students of NC Art & Design have progressed to degree level and beyond. They have gone on to jobs and careers in a wide range of sectors including: freelance artists who exhibit and sell their work, teaching, creative and performing arts, jewellery apprenticeships, museum and gallery sector, 2D 3D design and illustration.
