Care - Social Care & Services Practice (NQ) NQ
What is special about this course?
This National Qualification in Health and Social Care is most suitable for school leavers and mature students who are interested in caring for adults in a health or social care setting.
This stimulating course provides students with the opportunity to study subjects related to health and social care at Higher level. You will enjoy a mixed course of theory and practice both in college and in a placement to suit your chosen specialism. Successful students will gain a qualification to work in care settings for adults.
The course is full time and commences in August. Students will be required to attend college 3 days a week and 2 days in a social care or health care placement.
This course integrates care related modules with the SVQ 2 Social Services and Healthcare course.
Entry requirements
The candidate would normally be expected to have achieved 3 passes at national 5, one of which should be English. Non-traditional qualifications will also be considered, in particular for students wishing to take the vocational route.
Acceptance on the above courses will be subject to interview, satisfactory references and provision of PVG.
This course integrates care related modules with the SVQ 2 Social Services and Healthcare course.
In Semester 1, units include:
- First Aid at Work
- Practical Skills
- Health Promotion
- Caring for People with Dementia
- Working as a Team
- Communications (Core Skills)
- Numeracy (Core Skills)
In Semester 2, units include:
- ICT (Core Skills)
- Communicate and Complete Records for Individuals
- Support the Health and Safety of Yourself and Individuals
- Develop Your Knowledge and Practice
- Ensure Your Actions Support the Care, Protection and Well-being of Individuals
- Two further optional units from the SVQ 2 Social Services and Healthcare Framework
Optional units will be selected according to the client group the student is working with.

What can I do on completion of my course?
There are many job and career opportunities in social care employment in public, private and voluntary agencies working with various service user groups.
Successful students will gain a qualification that is registerable with SSSC for working with adults.
